Board of Directors

CCDC is run by a board of voluntary directors who live in and are elected by the community of  Coigach. In addition to elected directors, from time to time up to two directors may be co-opted on to the board, typically to fill gaps in expertise or experience. Like many people here the directors tend to have several jobs and many strings to their bows:

 Alison Sinclair was raised in Achiltibuie where her parents ran the local shop. Now a qualified engineer, Alison lives in Coigach and is Chair of Coigach Wind Power Ltd, CCDC’s subsiduary company that has planning permission to built a community wind turbine to generate much-needed income for local projects. Alison also runs her own business :Achiltibuie Bagpipe Specialists and the Coigach School of Traditional Music. She is a key figure in Ullapool and District Junior Pipe Band and Coigach Community Coastal Rowing.

Maureen Fraser and her husband Al came here many years ago to the schoolhouse, Al to the post of Head Teacher while Maureen took on the role of school secretary while running her own knitwear business. Now retired from school, Maureen is still busy designing and making her distinctive woollen jerseys and joined the CCDC Board in August 2012.

Theresa Ross is a well known face to both locals and visitors alike as proprietrix of Achiltibuie Stores – a busy role she combines with taking a very active part in the community at large  as Chair of Achiltibuie Tourist Association and as a committee member of the local parent association.

Ann Macleod came to Achiltibuie for a summer job at the hotel, met her husband and five children later is still here. Ann has recently retired from her care work with Highland Council and has been very involved in various aspects of  community life over the years particularly in her current role as Secretary of Coigach  Community Council. .

Linda Macleod (Company Secretary) manages the family-owned Port Beag Chalets in Altandubh where she grew up, also works part-time as a freelance administrative assistant near Lochinver and was one of CCDC’s first Local Development Officers. Like many Coigach people, Linda left to go to university, then followed her professional career but returned to raise her own children in the community.

Iain Muir (Chair) is a vet by profession and has worked in veterinary practice and pharmaceuticals  in Scotland, Ireland and England. He currently carries out locum work for practices in the Highlands, runs his own online veterinary medicine company from his Polbain croft and works as a freelance business advisor around the Highlands and Islands.

Iain Scott  is a fellow of The Charted Institute of Management Accountants, has an MBA from Edinburgh University and is a Chartered Director.  Over 17 years of his business career Iain worked in senior finance positions for each of the top three privately-owned construction companies in Scotland. A period at Westminster Healthcare followed where Iain led the finance function, initially, successfully moving back office functions from London to Inverness, then preparing for a successful management buy-out (MBO), and eventually becoming the Chief Operating Officer responsible for the care of 5,500 residents, by 7,500 staff. After the MBO exit,  Iain took a career change and became a professional Non-Executive Director and consultant.  Iain is a Director on a number of companies and sits on the Court (Board) of the University of the Highlands and Islands. Iain was co-opted onto the CCDC Board in late 2012.

Ben Walton (Treasurer) is a self-employed fisherman who fishes for shellfish  around the Summer Isles.  He is also a volunteer fire fighter, crofter and father and has just completed building  a family home in Polglass.

Phil Shaughnessy worked on the fish farm on Tanera until recently but now works for Ullapool Harbour Trust and knows his way round a boat. Phil is a member of our voluntary fire service  and was on our Piers and Harbours sub committee.

Steve Husband  runs his own engineering company and makes guy-ropes for the renewables industry. Steve is also a voluntary director for Coigach Wind Power Ltd, CCDC’s company set up to manage our proposed community wind turbine.  He is also a keen rower with Coigach Community Coastal Rowing , craftsman/woodturner and has a croft at Acheninver where he keeps Soay sheep.

Richard Williams and his wife Lizzie run Summer Isles Enterprises (SIE), a self catering and activity holiday business based on the Isle of Tanera Mhor. Richard now has a “boatman’s ticket” and rows for the CCRC.  SIE is a partner in the Coigach and Assynt Living Landscape project, managed by  Scottish Wildlife Trust.  Richard and Lizzie have just made a major contribution to the community’s future as they became new parents on 1 August 2012!

Richard is now working as CALL Development Manager.
